A member of the Federal Wild Fire Service Association Local F-262, Captain Oustad was an effective leader and well respected among his peers. After dedicating 25 years of service to the USFS, he was just four years shy of retiring. Along with Firefighters John Self and Heather DePaolo-Johnny, Captain Oustad were killed when their engine slipped off a dirt road and tumbled down an embankment during their patrol of fire lines during the Stanza Fire.
