California Firefighters Benevolent Fund

Thousands of California firefighters work tirelessly for our communities, day in and day out.  When catastrophic wildfires or natural disasters strike, many of our firefighters remain on the front lines, even as their own homes are lost.

The California Firefighters Benevolent Fund, a program of the California Fire Foundation, was initially designed to provide support to firefighters who are displaced or impacted by fire or natural disaster and to provide assistance to firefighters that sustained burn injuries in the course of their employment providing them with a benefit of $500. Donations are tax-deductible and all proceeds collected in the fund will go to firefighters who have suffered fire or disaster losses.

The fund was established in 2018 in response to the losses experienced by the firefighters battling the Camp Fire in Northern California and the Woolsey and Hill Fires in Southern California.

As time has gone on, we have been extremely fortunate to receive generous contributions from individuals and corporate donors to enable the fund to grow and increase this benefit to $1,000.

Today, the California Fire Foundation is honored to provide a Benevolent benefit for not only those firefighters impacted by fire or natural disaster, but for those injured or killed in the line of duty. With this enhancement the Benevolent Fund can award up to $5,000 to support firefighters and their families in their time of need. We are truly thankful for all our donors, large and small, who have helped make this enhancement a reality for our deserving firefighters.

For Firefighters:

The California Firefighters Benevolent Fund provides assistance and support to California firefighters displaced or impacted by fire or natural disaster (defined as fire, earthquake, flooding, landslides/mudslides), with a minimum of 25% damage to the property where they reside. Eligible firefighters will receive a $1,000 check for immediate relief.  Applications must be submitted within 30 days of the fire or natural disaster*.

The California Firefighters Benevolent Fund provides a line of duty injury benefit for active firefighter line of duty injuries that are directly related to delivering emergency services (to include training injuries) and not intended for long-term cumulative workers compensation injuries or illnesses that manifest themselves over time. Emergency room admittance is required. $1,000 will be distributed for the first 48 hours to 6 days of hospitalization, with an additional $500 per week up to a maximum of $5,000.

The line of duty death benefit is designed for line of duty deaths (as determined by the employing agency), that occur directly related to providing emergency services or training. The criteria used for placement on the California Firefighters Memorial Wall is the primary determining factor for this benefit of $5,000.

At the recommendation of the Executive Director and approval of the Benevolent Fund Advisory Committee, a grant may be awarded to assist firefighters with job related behavioral health issues that require in-house care of hospitalization. Such grants are limited to no more than $5,000 and will be reported to the Board of Directors consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Regulations.
