The California Fire Foundation offers grant opportunities to fire departments, firefighter associations, fire safe councils and other community organizations, which are based in California and serve our state’s residents in preventing, preparing and/or responding to major events, including wildfires, floods and climate-caused disasters.
Few areas of the world have felt the impact of climate change more acutely than California: devastating wildfires fueled by punishing drought and heat waves; flooding and mudslides driven by torrential rains; erosion and coastal damage from rising sea levels.
In 2020, nearly 4.2 million total acres burned — the most in a single year, and more than the last three years combined. 10,488 structures were damaged or destroyed and at least 31 individuals lost their lives.
Since 2018, CFF has teamed up with funding partners across the state to help our communities address the catastrophic effects of climate disasters through grant making initiatives — effects that threaten millions of Californians and visitors annually.
Through the generosity of our partners, CFF awards individual grants to recipient departments and organizations in support of projects and programs focusing on wildfire/disaster prevention, preparedness and/or relief and recovery assistance.
Across all of our grant programs, CFF’s funding priorities include:
- Vegetation Mitigation & Fuels Reduction
- PPE & Specialized Equipment
- Community Outreach Campaigns
- First Responder & Victim Behavioral Health and Wellness
- Disaster Relief and/or Recovery Assistance
- First Responder Training
Grants are only available to indicated California fire departments, firefighter associations, community organizations, nonprofit organizations, or other specified groups. Grants are not available for individuals.

- Grant program funds free vegetation clearing in Green Valley areas – Daily Republic
“The chipping program, funded by a grant from the California Fire Foundation, is part of an important strategy to increase wildfire resistance and enhance wildfire survivability,” Rochelle Sherlock, president of the [Green Valley Fire Safe] council, said.
