Michael Heuer dedicated his life to the noble service of others. He started volunteering as a firefighter in his twenties and worked at Bullion Volunteer Fire Department and later at the Sierra City Volunteer Fire Department, where he became Fire Chief. Off duty, he was a volunteer counselor at the Firefighters Burn Camp at Lake Tahoe, an active member of Lions Club International and recipient of the Melvin Jones Award for his community service and leadership. He died in the line of duty, after rescuing an injured fisherman in a river canyon.
