Harvey Dean Herzberg, known as “Dean” to all, began his career as a seasonal firefighter with the Redding Fire Department in 1976, and was hired full time in 1986. In 1990, he was promoted to engineer and in 1998, reclassified to fire inspector in the Redding Fire Prevention Bureau, a position he held until his retirement in 2013. Outside of work, his interests included camping, boating, rescuing and rehabilitating displaced and homeless golden retrievers as a volunteer, traveling, and wine tasting. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl. Dean died in 2015 following a 10-month battle with job-related cancer.
